Add a collar to a shirt for a professional appearance.

A collared shirt is a necessity for any man or woman's wardrobe. The collared shirt can be worn for both casual, work, and dress attire and pairs well with any suit. Sewing a collared shirt is a bit more advanced than sewing a typical t-shirt because it requires the sewing of buttons. If you plan to take on the challenge, be sure to use a pattern to help ensure the collar frames your neck line appropriately.

Step 1

Choose a pattern for a collared shirt. Collared shirt patterns can be found in nearly every pattern book at fabric stores. Make your selection based on gender and occasion. For instance, if you plan to wear the shirt to work, you may want to find a more stiff looking shirt pattern.

Step 2

Lay the pattern pieces on top of your fabric and cut out the pieces based upon your size for the front, back, and sleeves of the shirt.

Step 3

Assemble the front, back and sleeves of the shirt first with straight pins and then place the fabric on the sewing machine with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Sew the pieces together in the order specified in the instructions of the pattern.

Step 4

Cut out the collar pieces from your pattern. There should be two pieces.

Step 5

Lay the collar pieces together so the wrong sides of fabric are facing outward and pin together.

Step 6

Begin sewing the two pieces together at the center back of the neck edge. Start sewing from the center back neck edge down to one point of the collar. Then do the same from the center back neck edge down to the other point of the collar. Leave the remaining side open.

Step 7

Turn the collar inside out so that you can see the good side of the fabric and top stitch the remaining side closed.

Step 8

Pin the collar to the shirt neckline, lining it up evenly with the shoulders. Place the fabric on the sewing machine with the wrong side of the fabric facing up and carefully top stitch the collar onto the shirt.

Tip

If you chose a collared shirt pattern made for formal or dress wear, there may be a collar stand piece included in the pattern. Sew this piece to the collar bottom before sewing onto the shirt. Collar stands make a collar stand taller and stiffer.
