How to Create a Poster-Size Bulletin

How to Create a Poster-Size Bulletin thumbnail
Posters are often used for promotional purposes.

Creating a poster sized bulletin can be done using any professional graphic design software. Unfortunately, Windows does not come with software that can do this. So an additional program will be necessary. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign are excellent programs for creating a poster sized bulletin. Printing a large poster, however, can not be done on most home printers. The poster will need to be printed by a professional print shop or you can do it yourself at Kinko's, some Office Depot and Office Max locations or any other location that offers large-format printers. Printing a poster this large can cost several hundred dollars depending on the material and quality of the print.

Instructions

    • 1

Install or open a professional photo editing or graphics generating program like Photoshop or Illustrator.

    • 2

Create a new document with the dimensions of 18 inches by 24 inches. This is the standard size for most posters. The document should have a dots per square inch, DPI of 300. A lower DPI will result in lower print quality. The document should also be formatted in CMYK, this is the color format used by professional printers.

    • 3

Add text and images to the poster using the graphic imaging program. All the graphics should be centered. Limit text to a few key sentences. Keep text and images large; the message of the poster should be very clear when seen from a distance.

    • 4

Save the poster in PDF format. PDF is a standard format accepted by all professional printers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid adding content into the "bleed," the term used in printing to refer to the parts of the page that are beyond the sheet after they are cut. Do not put any content except the background color or image closer than two inches from the edges. This will ensure that the posters information does not get cut off when being cut by the printer.
