These symbols are known as "emoticons" because they convey emotions.

The keyboard allows you to communicate with other people by typing words, phrases and sentences using letters and numbers. The keyboard also allow you to communicate with others by typing a series of symbols that take on the shape of a face. The different faces convey emotions, such as happy or sad. These symbols are popular in applications such as email or texting, where you are communicating information or emotions quickly. For example, if someone asks how your day is, typing :) makes it seem as if you are having a pleasant one.

Instructions

  1. Happy or Sad

      Hold down the "Shift" button. This shifts the symbols that will appear when typed to the top or upper row on the keyboard. For example, the colon is above the semi-colon on the right side of the keyboard. Without pressing "Shift," a semicolon will appear if that button is pressed. When "Shift" is pressed, then the colon appears after hitting the same button.

      Make a colon. This will serve as the eyes for your face.

      Release the "Shift" button and press the "hyphen" button located on the top right of your keyboard next to the "0." This serves as the nose.

      Press the "9" button for a sad face or the "0" button for a happy face while again pressing the "Shift" button.

      :-( or :-) are your final results.

    Tongue Out or Big Smile

      Make a colon for your eyes.

      Press the "hyphen" button your your nose.

      Press the "P" button the finish the "tongue out" face.

      For a big smile, press the "Shift" button and press the "D." An uppercase "D" will appear.

    Cool or Smiling Sunglasses

      Press the "8" key.

      Press the "hyphen" key located next to the "0" key on the top right of your keyboard.

      Press the "L" key. Remember not to hit "Shift" as you want a lowercase "l" for the cool sunglass face.

      For a smiling sunglass face, press the "Shift" key and press the "0" key.

      Note, some people use a capital "B" in place of an "8."

    Pig Face

      Press the "3" key.

      Make a colon.

      Press the "hyphen" key.

      Complete the pig face by holding the "Shift" key and pressing "0."

    Blow a Kiss

      Make a colon.

      :

      Add your nose pressing the "hyphen" key.

      Finish the kiss by pressing the "Shift" key and pressing the "8" to make an asterisk.
