Write to your governor to share views on important issues in your state.

Writing letters to our elected officials is an important part of our country's participatory democracy. If you have concerns about something in Missouri you want to address with the governor, write a respectful, concise letter stating your concern -- e.g., problems with your county's infrastructure or concerns about the state budget. Share your opinion and identify any action you want him to consider. Be sure to include your full name and return address, especially if you are requesting a response.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your letter by including your full name and address centered at the top (unless you have actual letterhead to use) and write or type out the current date in full (e.g., April 4, 2011).

    • 2

Use the correct form of address and the governor's full official mailing address:

      The Honorable Jay Nixon

      Office of the Governor

      P.O. Box 720

      Jefferson City, MO 65102

Your salutation should be "Dear Governor Nixon."

    • 3

Write or type a short, concise letter no longer than one page. Clearly state the reason for your letter (for example, "I am writing to request your assistance with ..." or "I am writing because I am concerned about ..."). Outline the key points of the issue, staying on message and not adding in tangential issues.

    • 4

Conclude your letter by clearly stating what you want done to address the issue. You may suggest steps for the governor to take or request a response to your letter, but this should be done respectfully and with the understanding that he may or may not accept your suggestions. Some state officials do respond to constituents' letters while others have staffers handle such responses.

    • 5

Make and keep a copy of your letter for your records. Be sure you address the envelope clearly and legibly, using the same address you used on your letter (see Step 2). Include your name and return address on the envelope.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be concise and respectful throughout your letter. Always send it to the governor's official mailing address, never to his home address.

  • Do not use profanity or make any threats against the governor or other government officials. Do not include any substances (e.g., powder, stickers, confetti) in your envelope.
