How Can I Be a Good Chemist?

A chemist must know his profession and explain analytical findings.

A person in the chemistry field uses research skills in the analyzing and developing of chemicals, medications and technologies. Chemists are involved in a variety of industry fields, including medicines and forensics. A chemist may also be involved with administering quality control procedures on products along with working on research teams to test chemicals. Chemists must have a wide array of knowledge to work the analyzing instruments and computers to perform their job functions.

1. Obtain a strong background in chemistry based on the specialized field you desire. Learn biochemistry, genetics and microbiology for many specialties, such forensic chemistry. Seek a master's degree or a PhD as part of your background.

2. Develop patience and a mind for analytical detail. Learn how to work on a research team. Allow other chemists to voice ideas concerning research projects and base your discussions on factual evidence rather than opinion. Demonstrate good communication and interaction with other members on the team.

3. Document test results as accurately as possible and prepare to demonstrate the exact methods with which you reached those results. If creating instructions for other workers to perform a particular chemical process, explain the details in a concise and simple manner. Create comprehensive reports regarding new test methods as you follow all government and industry regulations.
