How to Edit Movie Clips on the Computer
People with video camcorders, digital cameras and smartphones often use the devices to record video. Many avenues exist to share that video footage with friends, relatives or a global audience. People serious about creating an entertaining or attention-grabbing video may wish to edit it. Fortunately, the computer is capable of editing videos by using the proper software. Use video-editing software to edit the video to your liking.

Open a video-editing application already installed on the computer. Download and install video-editing software if your computer does not have any. Windows Live Movie Maker, Avidemux and CineFX are free video editors available for users to download.

Click the "File" header in the top left portion of the screen. Select the option titled "Open," "Open File" or something similar to search your computer for video files. Select the video file from the computer (typically in "My Videos") and click "Open" (located at the bottom of the pop-up window).

Edit the video using the tools included with the application. Click the option titled "Edit," "Effects," or something similar located at the top of the window. Select the options as listed in the section. The "Trim" option lets you shorten clips. The "Split" option allows you to cut videos into sections. The "Merge" option enables users to join two video clips together. The "Transitions" option adds titles and end credits to videos. Review the other options that are unique to the software and add them as you see fit.

Review the changes made to the video in the storyboard. If possible, allow the edited video to play from beginning to end. If the video has been sufficiently edited, click "File," and select "Save As." In the pop-up window, write a name for the new video and select "Save." Allow several minutes for the video to render onto the computer.
