How to Metal Stamp & Oxidize an ID Bracelet thumbnail
ID bracelets can display important medical information.

An ID bracelet is a jewelry accessory engraved with a name, number or medical details. Metal stamping allows for any type of soft metal, such as silver, copper or brass, to be imprinted with numbers, letters, shapes and intricate designs. Jewelry oxidizing is a technique that uses liver of sulfur to weather the look of the bracelet and create an antique finish. A stamped and oxidized ID bracelet would make a great personalized gift.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. How to Stamp

    • 1

Draw the numbers, letters or design, to scale, onto the sticky note.

    • 2

Place the ID bracelet onto the stamping block. Place the sticky note onto the ID bracelet, in the exact spot where you want the design to be stamped.

    • 3

Place your selected metal stamp on the sticky note. Grip the side of the stamp firmly with one hand, and ensure it is aligned correctly.

    • 4

Hit the top of the metal stamp with the hammer. The amount of force you use should depend on the type of metal you are stamping. Generally one firm blow will produce a clear imprint on the ID bracelet. Repeat this technique with the other stamps, and remove the sticky note to complete the bracelet.

    How to Oxidize

    • 5

Place a pea-sized piece of the liver of sulfur into a small glass bowl. Fill the bowl up with two cups of tap water. Stir the mixture with a wooden or plastic implement, to prevent staining. A wooden chopstick will work well.

    • 6

Place the bracelet into the sulfur solution. Leave it until it visibly darkens to the desired color. Copper oxidizes the quickest, then silver, and brass takes the longest amount of time. The oxidizing process can take between two and 30 minutes.

    • 7

Put the vinyl gloves on. Remove the bracelet form the solution, and rinse thoroughly with warm tap water. Allow to air-dry before wearing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice stamping your design onto a scrap piece of metal for better results.
