How to Crochet the Picot Stitch

The picot stitch is an edging or pattern-making stitch in crochet. The picot stitch looks like a squared-off wave, and is made by doing a single crochet, followed by a chain three, followed by a slip stitch. You cannot make a picot stitch as the first stitch in a row. You must already have a line of stitches with which you can work, which is why the picot is popular as a finishing edge or for making a pattern in the body of the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the crochet hook in your dominant hand, and the work in your other hand. Insert the hooked end through the crochet space in the work that is under the spot where you want the picot stitch to go. Hook the yarn with the crochet hook and pull the yarn through the crochet space. You will now have two loops on the hook.

    • 2

Hook the yarn with the crochet hook again and pull it through the two loops on the hook. You will now have a single loop on the hook.

    • 3

Hook the yarn with the crochet hook and pull it through the single loop on the hook. Repeat twice more. This is called a chain three.

    • 4

Insert the hook through the first chain you made in the chain three series. Each chain has a side that faces you and a side that faces away. The side facing you has two threads, and the back of the yarn has one. Insert the hook between the two sides. You will then have the original yarn loop on the hook, as well as two additional loops from the first chain.

    • 5

Hook the yarn with the crochet hook and pull it through the three loops on the hook. This is the slip stitch. That completes the picot stitch.
