Choose high quality kernels. Go for kernels sold in a tightly sealed jar rather than a bag, and make sure your kernels look plump and uniform in temperature. Avoid dry-looking or shriveled kernels. Splurge on the high-end kernels if you can afford them.

Protect your popcorn's moisture content to ensure fluffy, full pieces. Store the raw kernels in the refrigerator. Add a wet cotton ball or a slice of bread to your storage container to keep the kernels moist. Dry, tight kernels yield small, dense popcorn.

Cook your kernels in a sturdy soup pot with a thick bottom. Apply a thin layer of an oil with a high smoke point, such as canola, palm or coconut oil. Avoid cooking your popcorn in butter because the milk solids and water content will increase the amount of steam and condensation in the pot.
