How to Cite the Code of Federal Regulations According to APA in a Paper

APA Style guides the format of all aspects of a research paper including proper citation.

Students and professionals in social and behavioral sciences usually present their work in American Psychological Association (APA) Style. Developed by social scientists, APA style sets the framework for writers to communicate in a straightforward and analytical fashion. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) establishes the rules and authority applicable to federal government agencies. The integrity of academic and professional integrity depends upon the author properly identifying and crediting information that advances her research. APA Style outlines the appropriate way to cite sources, including the CFR.

Instructions

1. Choose the regulations within the CFR that supports your research.

2. Cite your source information parenthetically within the body of your paper. In-text citations should appear as such: (Regulation Title, Regulation Year). An in-text citation for federal work-study would appear: (Federal Work-Study Programs, 1987.)

3. Create a more detailed citation for your reference section. Include the long regulation title, the title number, the part of the numeric title and the regulation year. Reference section citations should appear as such: Regulation Title, Title Number C.F.R. Part Number (Regulations Year). A reference section citation for federal work-study in a paper would appear: Federal Work-Study Programs, 34 C.F.R. pt 675 (1987.)
