How to Get a Business License in Utah to Sell on the Web thumbnail
Online businesses in Utah register the same way as traditional ones.

Although operating an online business may feel different than operating a traditional shop or office, the legalities are similar in Utah. Regardless of whether a business operates on the Internet or on Main Street, owners and operators need local business licenses, state tax registration and any professional licenses related to their industry or operation.

Instructions

    • 1

Form your business entity. Depending on what you plan to sell, your finances and the liability involved, you may benefit from a proprietorship; partnership; limited liability partnership, or LLP; limited liability company, or LLC; or corporation. LLPs, LLCs and corporations must be organized through the Utah Secretary of State's office, which makes information and applications available online. Consult a business attorney or accountant for advice on which business entity will benefit you and your business.

Apply for a business license with your city or county. Salt Lake City has applications available on its website; as of May 2011, the fee for a new business license is $100. In smaller towns, you may need to call or visit your city hall or county administration building to get applications and information.

    • 3

Obtain special or professional licenses that may be necessary for your business under Utah or municipal law. For example, Salt Lake City requires businesses selling clothing, alcohol, tobacco and sexually oriented products or materials to purchase special licenses. Additionally, the Utah Division of Occupations and Professional Licensing requires online pharmacies to apply for special licenses. Check with that office for any licenses that may be required for your business.

Register your business with the Utah State Tax Commission. Utah law requires you to collect, report and pay state sales tax. The commission has forms and instructions available on its website.
