How to Monitor Mentions and Tweets

Using Twitter isn't rocket science: you type a short message in fewer than 140 characters and fire it off to your followers. You can make your Twitter use more complex by using hashtags or mentioning specific users, which involves adding "#" and "@" symbols to your posts. You can then track how often you are mentioned and how often your tweets are re-tweeted on Twitter or via third-party software and Web sites.

Log in to your Twitter account and start tweeting. That part is easy but it's absolutely necessary to tracking. Twitter automatically tracks your tweets in a limited way by recording all your tweets and adding to the total displayed in the upper right corner of the screen next to your icon. Each time you tweet, that number goes up. You can monitor your own tweets from this screen at any time.

Use the Twitter interface to track your mentions, too. Whenever a Twitter user mentions you in a tweet, Twitter records that. You can find this information on the main Twitter page. Click on "@Mentions" to see all of the times you have been mentioned by other users. Keep scrolling down the page to expand the list.

Sign up for a third-party service that tracks Twitter activity if you want more than what the native tools offer. A good list of the top Twitter tracking services can be found with an online search. Tracking websites offer free and "pay for more" services. One such site is Twittercounter, which monitors your tweets and followers free but charges for access to detailed tracking features (including mentions). Another service, Tweetstats, is totally free. Choose a third-party Twitter monitoring service that matches your budget and specifications.

Use the email services from third-party tracking services to monitor your tweets and mentions on a daily basis. Most of the monitoring sites have email options and you can choose from daily or weekly updates of your stats. The daily stats package from Twittercounter (the free version) includes all of the information from the site's dashboard sent straight to your email account. You can find similar services if you search around the Web.
