How Do I Crochet Jewelry?
Crocheting isn't just for yarn. In fact, you can crochet out of almost any material that is long and thin, including fabric scraps and twine. Crochet jewelry using thinner yarns and thread or use wire for a metallic effect. Use a tiny hook and thin jewelry wire for delicate, lacy earrings or other items and crochet larger pieces using thicker wire and a larger hook. In either case, use a sturdy, metal crochet hook that is reserved only for jewelry because the wire will scratch it as you work.

Crochet With Wire
-
1
String 20 beads onto a spool of jewelry wire. The type of wire and bead you choose doesn't matter too much, because thicker wire and larger beads will make chunky jewelry items while thinner wire and smaller beads will make more delicate jewelry pieces.
-
2
Pull on the end of the wire and make a slip knot approximately 5 inches from the end. Slide your crochet hook into this slip knot.
-
-
3
Make 10 chain stitches using the wire and the crochet hook. To do this, bring the wire up and over the hook from the back to the front, catch the wire in the hook and pull it through the loop of wire on the hook, dropping the first loop to replace it with the new one. Repeat this for a total of 10 stitches.
-
4
Slide one bead up to the part of your wire that is near your crochet hook. Make another chain stitch, this time catching the bead inside the stitch as you pull the wire through the hook. Repeat this 19 more times to crochet each bead into a chain stitch.
-
5
Make 10 more chain stitches using wire only, just as you did in the beginning of the piece. Cut the jewelry wire using wire cutters or scissors, positioning your cut approximately 5 inches away from your last chain.
-
6
Make one final chain stitch. This time remove the hook from the loop and pull the wire end all the way through the stitch and pull to tighten.
-
7
Thread each end of the jewelry piece through a jewelry clasp. Wrap the wire end in and around the loop on the clasp three to five times and then twist the wire end around the body of the piece. Use pliers to pinch the ends of the wire and secure them and then cut off any excess.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure the beads you choose have holes that are large enough to accommodate the wire to pass through them.
This pattern will make a bracelet out of smaller beads and wire or a necklace out of larger ones; to make it longer add more chain stitches to the beginning and end, for smaller sizes take out a few chain stitches.
