-
2
Carve a simple pumpkin that includes the traditional carved pumpkin eyes and smile. Paint hair and other features on the pumpkin if allowed.

Create a pumpkin that features the name of the school, mascot or school initials instead of a face. Draw lettering and pictures on the pumpkin with a marker before cutting as a guide.

Use advanced carving techniques to create a unique pumpkin design. Remove all of the pumpkin from one part of the design and leave 1/4 inch or so of the pumpkin intact in other areas to create interesting effect when back lit.

Illuminate the pumpkin following the outlined rules. Place a snap light stick, small battery light or a flashlight in the pumpkin to light the carved artwork. Do not use candles or other light sources that require an open flame.
-
6

Tips & Warnings
Cut designs out with a knife for younger children, and allow them to use a spoon, to help remove the pumpkin seeds.
Supervise older children closely if allowing them to cut designs with a knife.
Use plastic carving tools specifically designed for pumpkins instead of metal knives or spoons.
Use caution anytime you work with a sharp knife. Take particular care when carving a pumpkin, as the knife has the potential to become slippery.
