A powerful audio system will enhance your listening experience.

The right sound setup can make the difference between a poor and an excellent listening experience. A powerful sound system is not enough if you want to take full advantage of your music, especially that earth-shaking bass present in most rap tracks. While most two-speaker audio setups fulfill the needs of many audio genres, an audio setup with a dedicated subwoofer and two or more speakers is a must if you want to feel the music---not just hear it.

Things You'll Need

  • Speaker system with dedicated subwoofer
  • Speaker specification sheet
  • Multichannel audio amplifier

Instructions

    • 1

Consult the speaker specification sheet to find out the frequency range your speakers can reproduce.

    • 2

Identify which speaker has the highest lower frequency to determine your crossover frequency. A crossover splits the audio signal into multiple streams and sends each speaker only the frequencies it can handle, leaving the lower frequencies for the subwoofer.

    • 3

Use the sound settings menu on your amplifier to set up the crossover frequency.

    • 4

Play the music and enjoy. If it doesn't sound quite right, you can fine-tune the crossover settings on your amplifier to attain your preferred sound.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you correctly identify your crossover frequency. Home theater systems, for example, have multiple speakers, each with different specifications; setting a crossover frequency to a frequency that can be reproduced by some of the speakers but is below the lowest frequency of others will create sound distortions.

  • Complex amplifiers have separate crossover frequencies on each channel. In such cases, set each channel's crossover frequency according to the lowest frequency of the speaker connected to that channel.

  • Don't set the crossover frequency too high to avoid forcing the subwoofer to reproduce higher frequencies. This will lead to a lack of bass depth and may also damage the subwoofer.
