Use a light worsted-weight yarn to make this baby shirt.

Crocheting clothes for infants and young children is a demonstration of your love and devotion. Some clothes projects may seem daunting. Difficult crafting methods measuring schemes and arm holes can deter some crocheters from undertaking the creation of a shirt for a baby. However, you can make a simple yet elegant halter-top shirt for a baby using a few basic crocheting techniques. This project is meant to fit a baby between zero and six months of age.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make 69 chain stitches. Do this by making a slipknot with the yarn and placing it on the hook. Bring the yarn across the tip of the hook, going from back to front. Grab the yarn with the tip and pull it through the slipknot. Drop the slipknot from the hook. A new loop should remain. You have made the firs chain stitch Catch the yarn again and draw it through the new loop as you drop it from the hook to make the second chain stitch (See Reference 1). Continue doing this until you have 69 chain stitches.

    • 2

Make a half double crochet stitch into the first chain stitch you made to join the work into a round. The half double crochet stitch is made by wrapping the yarn once around the hook, so that there should be two loops on the hook. Insert the hook into the chain stitch, catch the yarn and draw a third loop onto the hook. Catch the yarn again and pull it through all three loops as you drop them from the hook. A single new loop should remain (See Reference 1).

    • 3

Place the stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Make one half double crochet stitch into every stitch in the round.

    • 4

Continue making rounds of half double crochet stitches until the shirt body reaches its desired length. The shirt should cover your baby's belly and chest. Cut the yarn, draw it through the last loop and weave in the loose ends.

    • 5

Create the first halter tie by making a chain stitch into the 11th chain stitch you made at the beginning of the project. Continue making chain stitches until you have a length that measures 8 inches. Cut the yarn, draw it through the last loop and weave in the loose ends with the tapestry needle.

    • 6

Make the second tie by repeating Step 5, this time working in the 24th chain stitch from the beginning of the project.
