Scorpions are a source of fascination and fear for many people. Part of the arachnid family, scorpions commonly frequent dry climates. Scorpions are drawn to damp, dark and quiet locations around structures that provide cover from extreme temperatures. Although used primarily for defense, the stinging tail of a scorpion is capable of inflicting a painful wound. You can control scorpions around a home or property with the use of a homemade liquid insecticide.

Things You'll Need

  • Container
  • Water
  • Propylene glycol
  • Measuring cup
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Mask
  • Boric acid
  • Spray bottle

Pour 1 gallon of water into a container with a lid. Add 1 gallon of propylene glycol to the water. Place the lid on the container and shake to mix. Measure the liquids with a measuring cup.

Loosen the lid on the container and set it in full sunlight for 4 to 6 hours. Leave the container and mixture undisturbed to heat in the sunlight.

Remove the container from the sunlight when it is warm to the touch. The boric acid will mixed more easily in warm water.

Put on safety glasses, gloves and a face mask for protection. Remove the top from the container and add 1 pound of boric acid to the mixture. Place the top back on the container and shake to mix.

Pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Adjust the nozzle on the bottle to a coarse spray. Spray the mixture along cracks, crevices and in dark and damp areas where scorpions tend to hide. Leave the spray undisturbed to work into wood and cracks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use boric acid as the main insecticide as it is a natural product that is mined. Boric acid is effective on many insects and pests including scorpions as it dehydrates the insects from the inside and out resulting in death.
  • Use caution when treating areas accessed by children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion.
