How to Make a Great Homemade Vaporizer

A hot plate will heat water, releasing vapors into the air.

During the cold winter months of the year, heating a home can result in very dry air. This leads to unpleasant side effects like waking up with a dry throat, chapped lips or a dry nose. Vaporizers or humidifiers provide a possible solution to this issue. The distinction between these similar devices lies in the fact that vaporizers only release warm steam, where humidifiers can be cool-mist or warm-mist. Creating a great homemade vaporizer adds moisture to the air and can be made in an emergency with ordinary items found in most homes. There are several options that can work. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find a safe location for a plug-in hot plate. The location should be on a hard surface, elevated from the ground and be free of any clutter. Fill a metal cooking pot with water. Turn the hot plate on at the highest setting until it begins to steam. Reduce to the lowest setting and watch periodically to make sure all the water hasn't completely evaporated.

    • 2

Fill a slow cooker with distilled water to prevent mineral build-up. Place it in a safe location that's not at risk for being knocked over or bumped into. Turn the crock pot on low. Eventually the water will heat up and begin to steam, humidifying the room with hot, moist air. Slow cookers provide a safer alternative to a hot plate for overnight use.

    • 3

Fill a long metal pan with approximately 1 inch of water. Place the pan on a bare radiator. As the radiator is in use, it heats up the water causing it to slowly evaporate, making the air in the room less dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add several drops of your favorite essential oil to the water to release a pleasant scent into the room along with the water vapors.

  • A homemade vaporizer is not made with safety features that come with a store bought model. Use extreme caution when operating a hot plate for long periods of time.
