How to Set Color on Dyed Fabric

Preserve dyed fabric to prevent the color from bleeding and fading.

Fabric dye is used to add or alter the color of fabric before it is used for clothing or craft projects. Once the fabric dye is applied, it's best to set the dye to prevent it from bleeding, which results in dye transfer stains on other fabrics.

Things You'll Need

• Drying rack
• Bucket
• White vinegar
• Laundry detergent

Instructions

1. 

   Drying racks conveniently air-dry fabric.

   Dry the newly dyed fabric over a drying rack.

2. Place the fabric in a bucket and cover with undiluted white vinegar. Allow the dyed fabric to soak in the vinegar for 15 minutes to help preserve the fabric dye color.

3. Remove the fabric from the vinegar soak and wring it out. Wash the fabric in the washing machine with laundry detergent. Add 1 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle to further set the colorfastness of the fabric.

4. Hang dry the fabric on a drying rack to prevent fading that occurs in the dryer. Dry the fabric out of direct sunlight to avoid natural bleaching and fading.

Tips & Warnings

• Wear rubber gloves and old clothes when dying fabrics to avoid stains from splatters or spills.

• Wash newly dyed fabrics with clothing of a similar color to avoid accidental dye transfer.

• Keep the color of fabric dye bright by adding 1/2 cup vinegar to the wash cycle.
