How to Troubleshoot Weatherbug Problems

In addition to measuring the temperature, the WeatherBug Weather Station observes relative humidity and barometric pressure. It also provides data on real-time precipitation, wind speed and direction. Up to the minute, accurate weather forecasting is depended upon in both educational and commercial industries. So, when problems occur, troubleshoot quickly and confidently while applying the least amount of steps.

  • Verify that the surge protector is turned on (if you use one) and the master control unit (MCU) green power light is on. Reset the circuit breaker on the rear of the MCU if it has tripped and is pressed in. If your WeatherBug still does not work correctly, go to the next step.

  • Verify that a MCU and digital display is connected with a standard four-conductor phone line if no data appears on the digital display. Check the RJ11 phone cord connectors for proper installation. If your WeatherBug still does not work correctly, go to the next step.

  • Check the outdoor sensor suite data cable connections if the MCU display TX light does not blink on the digital display. If your WeatherBug still does not work correctly, go to the next step.

  • Verify that your WeatherBug is placed in a proper outdoor location if inaccurate data is shown on the digital display. It should be clear of heavy wind areas, heat and ventilation sources, and asphalt parking lots. It should also be placed in a safe area to counter vandalism. If your WeatherBug still does not work correctly, go to the next step.

  • Verify the wind sensor and sensor shelter are at proper distances from the roof. The wind sensor should be at least 10 feet away from the roof; the sensor shelter should be at least 8 feet away from the roof. If your WeatherBug still does not work correctly, go to the next step.

  • Verify that your uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and MCU power supply are connected properly if the MCU's battery low light displays. If your WeatherBug still does not work correctly, go to the next step.

  • Check your software configurations if the TX and RX lights on the MCU do not blink with communication attempts. Reinstall the software, if necessary. If your equipment still does not work correctly, contact WeatherBug for additional support.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the rain gauge if the readings appear to be inaccurately low. Remove any debris that clogs the inlet to the tipping bucket. At minimum, clean the rain gauge every three months.
