It won't matter how many pounds your fishing line can with-stand. If the hook knot is weak, you've got no fish. This simple knot looks like a tiny noose.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing Licenses
  • Fishing Gear
  • Fishing Hooks
  • Fishing Lines
  • Fishing Lures
  • Fishing Reels
  • Fishing Rods
  • Fishing Tackle
  1. Step 1

Ready your fishing line on the rod with any appropriate weights, spinners and other tackle.

  2. Step 2

Grab the fishhook along its flat plane between the thumb and index finger of your left hand.

  3. Step 3

Take the end of the line with your right hand. Thread 1 inch of the line through the hook eye.

  4. Step 4

Bend back the end of the line.

  5. Step 5

Cross the end over the main line and pin the intersecting lines with your right index finger and thumb. The hook should be trapped inside a loop you've created.

  6. Step 6

Turn the hook about five times with your left hand to make a twist in the line.

  7. Step 7

Feed the end of the line through the loop near the hook eye. The loop should be small now that you've twisted it down.

  8. Step 8

Grab the end of the line with your teeth.

  9. Step 9

Pull gently until the line is taut.

  10. Step 10

Let go of the hook with your left hand and then grab the main line above the knot.

  11. Step 11

Let go of the line with your right hand and pinch it above the knot between your right thumbnail and the nail of your index finger.

  12. Step 12

Tighten the knot by pushing it down the line toward the hook eye with your fingernails while pulling on the short end with your teeth.

  13. Step 13

Bite or cut off the excess line.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the end of the line taut (both in your teeth and by pulling back on the main line) while pushing down the knot with your fingernails.
  • To ensure that the knot is tight, pull back on the main line while holding the hook, then push down the knot again. Repeat until pulling on the line does not loosen the knot.
  • Don't twist the hook too many times or there will be no hole left to feed the end through.
  • Be sure to tighten the knot before trimming the excess line. If you trim too close and too soon, you'll pull the knot free while trying to tighten it.

on 11/22/2005 Tie swivel on first using twist method described earlier. Cut new 2' line & fold in half so its 1' long but doubled. Slide cut ends thru hook eye then back thru loop at other end of line pulling hook tight. Square knot the cut ends & place on swivel.

on 11/22/2005 Before tying on the hook (or lure), wetting the line in your mouth provides lubrication and makes pulling the knot tight a snap.
