How to Verify a Nursing License in the State of California

Created by The Nursing Practice Act, the California Board of Registered Nursing oversees the licensing and regulation of nurses in the state. To help protect the public against unlicensed nurses, the board created an online tool for for verifying the licensing status of a nurse. You can search the license status of both permanent licenses and temporary licenses. The board issues temporary licenses to nurses who have a license from another state or recent graduates from a nursing program who are awaiting their test results.

Permanent License

  • Go to the California Board of Registered Nursing website.

  • Click the "Permanent License Verification" link on the left side of the home page.

  • Click the "Board's Online License Verification System" link on the following page.

  • Enter the nurse's name or license number in the appropriate fields and click the "find" button. The screen will display all of the names matching your search criteria.

  • Click the name of the nurse whose license you wish to verify. The screen will display the issue date and expiration date of her license.

Temporary License

  • Go to the California Board of Registered Nursing website.

  • Click the "Temporary License and Interim Permit Verification" link on the left side of the home page.

  • Enter the licensee's name or temporary license number in the appropriate fields and click the "Search" button. The page will display the names and license expiration dates of all nurses that meet your search criteria.

  • You can also verify a license by calling (800) 838-6828.
  • Contact the Board of Registered Nursing if you encounter an unlicensed nurse.
