How to Uninstall FFmpeg

FFmpeg is an open cross-platform solution used to stream videos and audio in Linux and Unix operating systems. FFmpeg has many variations and versions; some will have extensions to the file name and others will be limited in purpose. A developer can install FFmpeg in a number of locations on the hard drive using the “make install” command, but there are common standards in place to keep the install unified throughout the industry.

Locate where FFmpeg file is stored. A common place to store FFmpeg is “/usr/local/src/ffmpeg." If you placed it into a different directory, then go to the install directory. If you can’t find the file location, type “locate ffmpeg,” without the quotes, at the command line.

Type “make uninstall,” without the quotes, and press the “Enter” key. This command will remove the file and the related files from the FFmpeg folder, and from the “/usr/lib” and “/usr/bin” folders.

Verify FFmpeg has been removed by typing “locate ffmpeg,” without the quotes, at the command line.
