Yellow files are difficult to manage in an open-air environment. For killing yellow flies in small areas, malaise traps have been found effective. Malaise traps can trap a large number of flies. Malaise traps use carbon dioxide and other chemicals to attract the yellow flies. The malaise traps are also placed in the flight paths of those flies. While bug zappers are advertised to be effective, malaise traps provide a better way to truly attract and exterminate yellow flies.

Things You'll Need

  • Malaise trap
  • Four, 4-foot wood poles
  • One, 5-foot wood pole
  • Five wooden sticks
  • Rope
  • Mesh lining
  • Glass jar
  • Ethyl alcohol

Place two poles of the malaise trap 3 feet parallel to each other. The front two poles should be 4 feet tall. Hit a wooden stick into the ground next to the poles using a hammer. Place the wooden sticks 6 inches into the ground and 3 feet away from the poles. Tie the center of the poles of the malaise traps to the top wooden sticks using rope.

Place two poles of the malaise trap 5 feet perpendicular from the front poles. That makes a rectangular shape. The back two poles should be 4 feet tall. Hit a wooden stick into the ground next to the poles using a hammer. Place the wooden sticks 6 inches into the ground and 3 feet away from the poles. Tie the center of the poles of the malaise traps to the top wooden sticks using rope.

Place one pole at the peak in front of the malaise trap in the center of the front poles. The peak pole should be 5 feet tall. Hit a wooden stick into the ground next to the pole using a hammer. Place the wooden stick 6 inches into the ground and 3 feet away from the front pole. Tie the center of the pole to the top of the wooden stick using rope.

Tie the roof of the trap to the top of the poles and peak pole. A wire wall hangs from the roof in the middle of the trap. The yellow flies hit the trap and fly upward toward the trap. Eventually, they will fly into the glass jar.

Fill the glass jar, located outside of the roof, with 1 cup of ethyl alcohol. The alcohol kills and preserves the yellow flies.
