There are two types of temporary tags for automobiles in the state of Arizona -- a three-day restricted use permit and a 30-day general use permit. The restricted use permit allows the operator of a vehicle to drive from his home to a local Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain emissions testing or purchase permanent plates and tags. The general-use permit functions just like a regular license plate does until it expires. In Arizona, temporary tags can be obtained on the Internet, which allows a person to bypass the long line at the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles.

Step 1

Visit the ServiceArizona website (servicearizona.com). The restricted use permit link is located in the "Most Popular Services" section on the home page. If a 30-day general use permit is sought, scroll down the page to the bottom until the "All Services" section can be seen.

Step 2

Click the link with your mouse. A new page will be brought up indicating the steps to obtain a temporary tag. Read through the list then click the "Begin 30-Day General Use Permit" button at the bottom of the window. Once clicked, a window will open and will ask to test a printer. Click the "sample print page" button to ensure that the printer is setup properly. When done with the printer test, click the "Continue" button.

Step 3

Type the vehicle identification number (VIN) in the first box and type the drivers license number of the person who owns the vehicle in the second box. Once this is done, click "Continue". A new page will appear with the vehicle information that you have provided. Click "Continue" to go to the payment page.

Step 4

Enter the drivers name, address and debit or credit card number and it expiration date in the appropriate fields. When all the information is entered, click "Continue" and a new page will be displayed with an order summary indicating the amount the card will be charged. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Continue" to finalize the process.

Step 5

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Print Permit" button. A printer window will appear asking how many copies of the permit need to be printed. Select the amount of copies in this window and click "Print". After a moment, the permit should begin printing. Once the permit and temporary registration has printed the tag may be displayed on the vehicle.
