How to Use the Flea Comb

Save

Flea combs are beneficial to pets who are very young, nursing or pregnant, elderly or debilitated and cannot tolerate flea insecticides. Flea combs have very fine teeth that are closer together than the width of fleas to remove fleas and dead hair while grooming your dog or cat.

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Dish soap
  • Flea comb

Step 1

Pour water in a bowl and add dish soap to it. Swish the water so the dish soap makes a bubbly mixture.

Step 2

Comb your pet starting near his face working back toward his tail. Stroke him firmly in the direction of his hair growth.

Step 3

Hold the comb over the bowl of soapy water. Press down on the teeth to remove dead hair and fleas into the soapy water.

Tip

  • The soap in the water will kill the fleas and keep them from jumping out of the bowl and back into your house, on you or on your pet.

Step 4

Continue combing your pet thoroughly from head to tail, on his sides and stomach to remove all fleas and loose hair.

Tip

    • Use a flea comb on your pet weekly for flea maintenance or as often as twice daily if he has many fleas.
    • Concentrate on the areas where fleas appear on your pet. Cats have more fleas on the neck and dogs have more fleas on the belly and lower back.

Warning

  • Use a flea comb on your pet only when his hair is dry.
