How to Format Unallocated Space

Unallocated space is unused and unformatted space on a disk drive. Unallocated space is typically the result of deleting a partition and is unusable until formatted with a file system your operating system can understand. Formatting the free space is fairly simple using the Windows Disk Management utility.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu and select "Control Panel." Select "System and Maintenance," then "Administrative Tools."

    • 2

Double-click "Computer Management." Select "Storage," then "Disk Management."

    • 3

Right-click the unallocated space and select "New Simple Volume."

    • 4

Enter a name for the new partition, then enter the desired size. The size must be entered in megabytes. Select the desired file system format.

    • 5

Click "Next," then "Finish" to format the unallocated space to create the new partition.
