How to Convert Video Under 700MB
Advances in technology have made shooting personal video fun and incredibly simple. With the ability to record video on cell phones, portable music players, computers, and small, handheld digital video cameras, it is now easier than ever to capture footage of nearly anything you want. And while these advances have also made it much easier to store these large video files on our computers, sharing them with others or uploading them to the Internet often requires you to reduce the file size.
Instructions
-
-
1
Transfer the video to your computer's hard drive if it is currently stored on a digital video camera or other device.
-
2
Download and install a video converter program compatible with your computer. Some converters run only on Windows or Mac systems.
-
-
3
Open the video file in the video converter program. The program will automatically identify the type of file, its file size, frame rate, bitrate, audio specifications and other details that can be changed in an attempt to reduce the file size.
-
4
Choose the frame size for your new video file. Frame size refers to the final output resolution or the number of pixels in height and width, of the video. The frame size has a large impact on the overall file size. Videos with smaller frame sizes take up less space, so select a frame size that works best for the device on which you will watch the movie. For example, 1080p high-definition movies have a frame size of 1,920 pixels in width by 1,080 pixels in height and many smart phones have a screen resolution of 960 pixels by 640 pixels. The option to change the frame size is found in the video converter program's "Picture Settings" or "Output File" window.
-
5
Select a target file size for the new video file. Many video converter programs offer the user the ability to select the maximum file size for the video and the program reduces other settings automatically. This is often found in the video converter program's "Picture Settings" or "Output File" window.

6
Click the button labeled "Start," "Convert Now," or "Finish" to begin converting the video into a smaller file.

Tips & Warnings
Consider the final output resolution, or frame size, of your video before converting the video file. If you plan on watching the video on a smart phone, a much smaller resolution is required than if you were to watch it on an HDTV. Many video converter programs offer presets, such as "Smart Phone" or "1080p" that automatically adjust the video file's settings to match the device you will use it on.
Attempting to increase the frame size of a video from the original file will only reduce the quality and increase the file size of the video.
Converting DVD and Blu-ray movies to video files and sharing them on the Internet is illegal and may lead to prosecution.
