Knowing how to successfully count cards has been shown to increase your odds of winning at the blackjack table. There are many different methods of counting cards, but given the focus needed and the importance of accuracy, the Hi-Lo system is an ideal method to start with. Counting cards is legal, but casinos can and will kick you out if they suspect that you are counting cards.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn the counting value system. Cards numbered 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are considered a "plus 1." Cards 7, 8 and 9 are considered a "0." Cards with a value of 10 or higher, including face cards and aces, are considered a "minus 1."

    • 2

Practice your calculating abilities to the point where the count becomes effortless. Practice at home with the radio or TV on in the background, and with friends by carrying on conversations with them while card counting.

    • 3

Pay attention to all the cards dealt and mentally add up the score. With every card dealt, you need to update the score. A higher score means there are fewer smaller cards left in the deck. Since the dealer must "hit" on anything under 16, a higher score increases the odds of the dealer busting and your chances of winning or getting a blackjack. If you lose count of the cards, you'll have to start the count over when the dealer starts a new deck of cards.

    • 4

Be smooth with your count and conceal the fact that you're counting by carrying on conversations with other people at the table. Counting cards is legal but frowned upon, and will result in you being asked to leave, which neutralizes the whole experience. Learn to act like a real gambler. Don't dramatically increase your bets when you know you're going to have a good hand; this draws unwanted attention from casino personnel and is a sign of card counting.
