Photoshop filters help to hide both wrinkles and blemishes.

Graphic designers and photographers have long used Photoshop to touch up blemishes in existing photographs, but the program eventually developed into an all-purpose art tool. One of the simplest applications of Photoshop is for smoothing over blemishes that occur on a subject's skin in a photograph. You can do this using a variety of Photoshop tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click on the Photoshop icon on your desktop to run the program. Click on the "File" menu and select "Open." Navigate to where your digital photo is located and double-click on the file. Photoshop will now load your photograph.

    • 2

Click on the "Magic Wand" tool in the "Toolbar." The "Magic Wand" selects areas of similar color in a picture. Hover the "Magic Wand" over the skin and click once. The skin should now be selected, but the selection may not be perfect.

    • 3

Adjust the selection using the "Lasso" tool. To add missed areas to the selection, hold the "Shift" button down and click around the edges of the piece you wish to select. Once the piece is encompassed, the new selection will join with the original. To exclude part of the picture that you do not wish to have selected, do the same thing but hold the "Control" button instead of "Shift." Make sure that features such as lips and eyes are not selected.

    • 4

Go to the "Select" menu at the top of your screen and click on it. Go down to "Modify" and hover your mouse over it until a second drop-down menu appears. Click on "Feather."

    • 5

Enter the number 10 into the window and click on "Okay." This will give your selection a soft edge so that any changes you make will appear to be gradual.

    • 6

Go to the "Filters" menu at the top of the screen and click on it. Hover your mouse over the "Blur" option until a new drop-down appears. Select "Surface Blur."

    • 7

Play with the two sliders to adjust the amount of blur you wish to apply to your selection. You should use a very small amount to smooth blemishes and wrinkles from skin. Photoshop gives you a preview as you adjust the blur so you can customize it to the level you wish. Click "Okay" once you are done, and save your file.
