How to Convert an NEF File

Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) files are the exclusive file format for Nikon cameras. They are RAW images saved to a Nikon camera's memory card. They're high-quality, uncompressed images, so they aren't ideal when you want to share your pictures. You'd be better off converting to a JPEG or TIFF. To convert NEF files to a different format, you need photo software that can open the NEF and has the ability to save it as a new file type. Programs like Google Picasa, Adobe Photoshop, and ACDSee can convert NEF files for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the NEF file you want to convert.

    • 2

Right-click the NEF file, highlight "Open with" and choose your photo-editing program to open the file.

    • 3

Click "File" and click "Save as."

    • 4

Rename the suffix of the NEF file to another image. For example, if you named your NEF file "sample.nef," then change it to "sample.jpg" or "sample.tif."
