Fruit smoothies originated in the 1960's as essentially a blend of fruit and juice. As the chilled beverage evolved, however, it moved into class of its own for its myriad flavor combinations. Variants of fruit smoothies often include vegetables, such as the broccoli-raspberry, to versions containing alcohol, such as the mojito-passion fruit. Although the combinations of flavors fruit smoothies can attain seems infinite, the basic ratio of fruit to juice stays relatively the same: 2 cups of fruit to approximately 2-1/2 to 3 cups of liquid. Things You'll Need

  • Basic Fruit Smoothie:
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 1/2 cup juice of choice, such as orange or apple
  • 2 tbsp. clover honey
  • 2 cups fresh fruit of choice, such as bananas, strawberries or raspberries
  • Mojito Smoothie:
  • 2 oz. light rum
  • 1 1/2 oz. lime juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. passion fruit puree
  • 4 oz. clear sweetened soda
  • 2 tbsp. turbinado or raw sugar
  • 2 fresh mint branches with leaves attached

Instructions

  1. Basic Fruit

    • 1

      Pour 3/4 cup whole milk, 3/4 cup plain or vanilla yogurt and 1/2 cup juice of choice, such as orange or apple, into the blender.

      Pour 2 tbsp. clover honey and 2 cups fresh fruit of choice, such as bananas, strawberries or raspberries, in the blender.

      Blend until smooth and garnish with a piece of fruit that comprises the smoothie.

    Passion Fruit Mojito

      Pour 2 oz. light rum, 1-1/2 oz. lime juice, 1-1/2 oz. passion fruit puree and 4 oz. clear sweetened soda in a blender.

      Add 2 tbsp. turbinado or raw sugar and 6 ice cubes to the blender.

      Blend until smooth, pour in a glass and garnish with 2 fresh mint branches, with leaves attached.
