How to Price a Used Washer & Dryer

Determining the age of the appliance helps you decide how much to charge.

Selling a used washer and dryer can be a smart decision since the money you receive can be rolled into new appliances. If you don't need to buy new appliances because you are moving to a new home with a washer and dryer, you'll still want to sell your old appliances for the best possible price. Age and mechanical condition are the main factors affecting what you can expect to charge for a used washer and dryer.

Instructions

1. Pull the appliances out from the wall to check the model numbers and any identifying information printed on the back panels. If you don't know when the appliances were purchased new, the model number can help you determine the age. Contact the manufacturer with the model numbers to find out the approximate age of your washer and dryer.

2. Divide the cost of a new washer and dryer--with identical or at least comparable features to yours--by 10 years. This is the average lifespan of a washer or dryer purchased new. For example, if you paid $800 for both appliances, dividing by 10 would give you a value of $80 per year.

3. Subtract the age of the appliances in years from 10. For example, if the appliances are three years old, then 10 minus 3 equals 7 remaining years of useful life.

4. Multiply the number of remaining years by the annual cost of the washer and dryer. In this example, multiply 7 by $80, which is $560. This is a good starting point for an asking price.

5. Examine both appliances for cosmetic damage and evaluate their operating condition. If both are in excellent condition, you can probably set a firm asking price. If the appliances have been used heavily, show obvious signs of wear such as nicks and scratches or have any known mechanical problems, you'll need to adjust the price downward if you expect to sell them.

6. Check online auctions and classified advertising boards to compare the asking price of appliances comparable to yours. This helps you set a competitive price. You may even want to set a lower price if you're in a hurry to sell.

7. Pick the lowest price for which you are willing to sell the washer and dryer, then stick to it. Advertise at a higher price so you have room to negotiate with potential buyers without dropping below your minimum price.
