How to Convert a WAV Bitrate

Save

WAV files -- the de facto standard format for sound on PCs -- produce high-quality audio, but can be large in size. The use of an audio converter is required to convert these files to new audio formats. Several free sound editors exist to make this process simpler. Each editor uses the same basic process for converting files. The bitrate itself will indicate the level of quality between the songs. Lowering the bitrate will decrease the file size and decrease the quality of the file. Use your best judgment when converting the bitrate, but avoid going lower than 192 kbps if it is a music file.

Things You'll Need

  • Audio editor (See Resources)
  • Download and install one of the free audio editors.

  • Start your audio editor and drag or use the import option to open the file you would like to convert into the application.

  • Export the file by using the "export" function. In the "File" menu, choose the option that allows you to export audio. In Audacity, this function is "export as."

  • Select the options you would like for your new audio file. You can choose from a wide range of audio file formats. The best option is to convert to an MP3 file, however, you may keep it as a WAV. Before exporting, select the new bitrate that you would like to use for your file. You can generally choose a bitrate from 8 kbps to 320 kbps.
