How Do You Add Someone to Your Chat List on Facebook?
Social media utility Facebook connects you with your friends using several means, such as public "Wall" and "News Feed" posts, picture and video uploads and direct, private messages. It's also possible to communicate with your friends in real-time using Facebook chat. All users you befriend appear in your chat list when they're online and logged into Facebook.

Open the "Facebook Chat" box from time to time to monitor your Facebook Chat interface to see whether or not a given user is online. If a user with whom you're friends is online and using Facebook, he automatically appears in your chat.

Tips & Warnings
If a friend of yours never appears in your chat list, it's possible he's set himself to be offline. Alternatively, he may have added you to a list of people with whom he doesn't want to chat. Contact friends on an individual basis to ask them about irregularities with chat and being online.
