How Do I Change the Aspect in a DirecTV Receiver?

Make sure the aspect ratio of your DirecTV receiver box matches the aspect ratio of your television set. This ensures that all video content is being displayed properly on your TV. For example, if you have a widescreen television set, you'll want to make sure the receiver is outputting video to the same ratio. If its not, video information could end up looking distorted and of low quality.

  • Turn on the television connected to your DirecTV receiver box as well as the box itself using each device's remote control.

  • Press the "Menu" button on the DirecTV remote.

  • Select "Audio and Video."

  • Choose "Video Adjustment."

  • Select "Aspect Ratio." The two options that will appear on screen are "4:3" and "16:9." Select "4:3" if you own an older cathode ray tube television set. Select "16:9" if you have a plasma, LCD or LED television set.
