How to Draw & Paint Figures
Figures in art generally are considered to be people, but they can also include creature and object figures. Wooden figure models can be used to create the accurate proportions of the figures that you draw and then paint. Wooden figure models can be found in art stores and on art merchant websites. Practice creating accurate depictions of the figure models to develop your skills in creating your own personal drawn and painted art figures.

1
Use the joints in the figure model to move the figure to make the gesture of the figure that you want to draw and paint. Move around the arms, legs and neck of the figure until you get it in the desired position.
-
2
Sketch the outline of the figure using a pencil on sketch paper. Start by drawing the silhouette of the figure as you see it from your angle, using your pencil so you can erase and redraw when necessary. This will help you create the proper dimensions for the figure so that it looks realistic.

3
Look at the shadows on the figure and use your pencil to lightly shade in these areas around the perimeter of your figure. This will also contribute to the realistic dimensions of the figure you are drawing.
-
4
Paint the figure using watercolor, acrylic or oil paint with a paintbrush. Give the figure a base layer of paint, then add painted dimension to the figure by making the model figure's shaded areas darker on the drawn and painted figure.
