How to Hit a Draw With a Hybrid

How to Hit a Draw With a Hybrid thumbnail
A hybrid club can get you out of a tricky situation.

A new development in golfing equipment, hybrid clubs are finding their way into bags of professional and recreational golfers. A hybrid club is one that's designed to be a mix between an iron and a wood; these clubs are meant to replace 3-irons, 4-irons, 5-woods and 7-woods. Hybrid clubs have been given the nickname "rescue clubs" because they're often used in situations where the ball is in a rough spot and a tricky shot is required. Hitting a draw with a rescue club requires only minor adjustments from a typical draw swing.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand over the ball. Your feet should be positioned 10 to 45 degrees to the right of where you would normally line up for a shot. The ball should be positioned about one ball-length behind where it would rest for a normal hybrid shot.

    • 2

Hold the club with a slightly closed grip. What this means is that your club should be turned inward, toward you.

    • 3

Choke up on the club about an inch so that your hands are closer to the ball.

    • 4

Pull the club back on a path that is inside the path you would take for a normal shot.

    • 5

Hit the ball. Just like with a wood, try to make contact with the ball before you hit the ground.

    • 6

Follow through to complete your swing. As you make contact with the ball, your hands should begin to turn over counter-clockwise. Your swing otherwise should be executed the same as usual, but the path of your follow-through should be outside the typical path of a shot.
