Instructions to Make Candy Stripe String Bracelets

Candy stripe string bracelets are friendship bracelets made with solid colored stripes. The name candy stripe comes from the fact that they look similar to brightly colored striped pieces of candy. The solid colored stripes are made by tying one string to the other strings of the bracelet, one color at a time, in a single half hitch knot to make a row of knots. Once you learn the pattern, the bracelets are simple and quick to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three 3-foot strands of each of the three different colors of embroidery thread. Hold the nine strands together and align their ends. Tie all nine threads together in a simple overhand knot 2 inches from the top of the threads.

    • 2

Pin the knotted end of the threads to your pants with a safety pin to anchor your work. Separate the threads and group the threads that are the same color. For instance, if you are making a candy stripe bracelet with pink, blue and green threads, you should have three pink threads on the left, three blue threads in the middle and three green threads on the right.

    • 3

Pick up the left-most sting (string one). Tie it in a half hitch knot around string two. Tie a half-hitch knot by wrapping string one around string two from the front to the back to make a 4 shape with the strings. Then reach an index finger through the loop to grab the free end of string one and pull it through the loop. Repeat this knot one more time using the same two strings.

    • 4

Tie string one to each of the remaining seven strings in order from left to right in a half hitch knot. When you have completed the first row, string one will now become string nine.

    • 5

Pick up the new string one and tie it twice to each of the strings in a single half hitch knot, going in order from left to right. Keep picking up the left-most string (string one) and tying it in a half hitch knot to each of the strings to make knotted rows or solid-colored stripes.

    • 6

Continue tying the strings into knots until the bracelet reaches 6 inches long. Hold all the strands together and tie them in a simple overhand knot. The knot should be snug against the last row. Unpin the bracelet from your pants. Trim the ends to make them even.
