How to Darken a Video
Videos on computers can be adjusted without physically altering the file. To darken a scene in a video playing on a computer, adjust the setting of the monitor that influences the overall brightness. This permits you to darken the video regardless of the video playback program in use since some programs do not feature settings for altering the brightness level. The adjustment to the monitor is not permanent and can be reset after the video finishes playing.

Launch a video playback program that is already on the hard drive, for example, Windows Media Player, by selecting it from the "Start," > "All Applications" menu.

Click "File" at the top of the program's main window. Select "Open File" from the drop down menu. Navigate in the window that appears to the video that will be played. Click once on the file. Click the "Open" button at the bottom of the window.

Press the "Menu" button on the computer monitor; the button is normally located beneath the front bezel at either the left or right side.

Press the "Up" and "Down" buttons -- normally located to the right of the "Menu" button -- to move the highlighted cursor over the choices being presented on the screen. Stop moving the cursor when the "Brightness" icon -- normally portrayed as a sun with rays emanating from it -- is highlighted.

Press the "Enter" or "Select" button that is normally located right next to the "Menu" button to bring up the "Brightness" menu.

Press the "Down" button to decrease the brightness of the monitor; the visual indication for this will be a bar that becomes less filled as the "Down" button is pressed, while a number to the right of the bar also decreases in size. Stop pressing the "Down" button when the overall brightness of the monitor has been darkened 50% compared to what it was before.

Press the "Enter" button to exit the "Brightness" setting. Press the "Menu" button to exit the setting menus.

Press the "Play" button on the video playback program to play the now-darkened video. Quit the video playback program when you are done.
