How to Upgrade From Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Professional
You can directly upgrade your Windows Vista Ultimate operating system to Windows 7, as long as the operating systems are both 32-bit or 64-bit. The upgrade process installs Windows 7 on top of your current installation. Your documents are left untouched, while the system files are upgraded to Windows 7. Generally your programs should work without needing to reinstall them as well, but some compatibility issues may arise due to the change in operating systems.
