How to Dye Noodles to Make Necklaces for Children

Dyeing noodles is a fun and easy craft.

Ordinary pasta comes in a beige color that is not very interesting for most people. Some colored pasta is available but the colors are still not very bright. Fortunately, you can create brightly colored pasta with a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time. If you choose pasta with holes through the center you can string the colored pasta into necklaces once it is dry. This is a project that older children can help with although the rubbing alcohol makes everything smell quite strong.

Things You'll Need

• Liquid food coloring
• Rubbing alcohol
• Dry pasta
• Resealable plastic bags
• Colander or strainer
• Cookie sheet
• Old newspaper or towels

Instructions

1. Pour one or two cups of dry, uncooked pasta into a resealable bag.

2. Pour rubbing alcohol into the bag until it just covers the pasta.

3. Add in ten to fifteen drops of liquid food coloring. You can use just one color or combine them to create new colors.

6. Drain the liquid out of the pasta but do not rinse it. Spread the pasta out on a newspaper-covered cookie sheet and allow it to dry for several hours or overnight.

7. String the pasta onto necklaces after it is completely dry.

Tips & Warnings

• You can also dye this pasta in glass jars. If you do this, shake the jars every hour or so to mix up the coloring.

• The smell of rubbing alcohol should fade once the noodles are completely dry.

• Do not allow children to eat these noodles.
