Lower a container or bottle elbows length down into the pool water. Pull the container out of the pool and test the water for cyanuric acid content (Cya) using a home testing kit or the help of a local pool store.

Write down cyanuric acid results of the water test. The recommended cyanuric acid amounts in a swimming pool is between 40 and 80 parts per million.

Broadcast the recommended dosage amount of a powder based stabilizer into the pool water. The recommended dosage amount depends heavily on the brand of stabilizer being used as well as the level of cyanuric acid already present in the water. A safe dosage amount is 1 pound of stabilizer per 10,000 gallons of water in the pool.

Gather a new sample of the pool's water form elbows depth in the pool after waiting several hours for the treatment to circulate. Retest the water for cyanuric acid content and record the results. Add more stabilizer to the pool water until the desired or recommended stabilizer level is reached.
