Instructions

    • 1

Grow the broom plant as a perennial in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 6 through 8. This plant grows well in areas where the lowest temperature during the year is between minus 10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It also grows as an annual or a houseplant in climates outside this range.

    • 2

Select a planting site in full sun for the broom plant. This plant normally grows in open fields and does not tolerate shade.

    • 3

Loosen the soil to a depth of several inches in the planting site with a garden trowel. The broom plant grows well in poor acidic soil and tolerates a range of soil types as long as it drains well.

    • 4

Dig a hole in the planting site that is twice the size of the nursery container. Remove the broom plant from its container without damaging the roots. Place the plant in the hole and adjust its position so that its soil line is even with the surface of the soil.

    • 5

Firm the soil around the broom plant and water the soil with 1 inch of water. Provide 1 inch of water per week during the first growing season, so that the plant can establish its root system. A broom plant should not require maintenance after this point.

    • 6

Take root cuttings from a mature broom plant in midsummer. Remove the plant from the ground and slice off a 1- to 2-inch section of a root with a sharp knife. Plant the cutting at a depth of 1 inch in another planting area to propagate the broom plant.
