How to Count the Number of Chips on RAM

A single RAM module can contain up to 18 memory chips

Most computers require Random-Access Memory (RAM) modules to function. A RAM module is a small integrated circuit board with memory chips embedded into it. Your computer can save temporary data on those memory chips and retrieve them later. The number of memory chips on a single module varies according to the manufacture and design of that particular module. You can count the number of memory chips on a RAM module in just a few steps.

Instructions

1. Disconnect your computer from any power source and unscrew the screws at the back of your computer case.

2. Remove the side panel by sliding it backward.

3. Locate the RAM modules. They are in special slots on the motherboard, which are typically near the central processing unit (CPU).

4. Remove the RAM module by pressing on the white retaining clips at the edge of the RAM slot. Gently pull on the RAM module to remove it.

5. Count the memory chips. They are black rectangles and are on both sides of the module.
