How to Create a Cartoon in GIMP

If you would like to create your own comic strip, you need to be able to draw basic cartoon figures. While you could draw these by hand, an easier approach is to create your cartoon figures in a graphics program. Instead of using an expensive commercial product for this purpose, use the freeware application GIMP, which has all the tools you need to get the job done.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the GIMP application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "New." In the dialog that appears, enter the width and height you want for your cartoon. Click "OK."

    • 2

Click on the "New Layer" button at the bottom of the "Layers" panel.

    • 3

Select the "Path" tool from the toolbar. Use it to draw the torso of your figure. Then go to the tool options and click "Selection from Path."

    • 4

Use the "Paint Bucket" tool to fill the torso with the color you want. For example, your character might be wearing a blue shirt.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 5, to create the other major parts of the figure, such as the head, arms and legs.

    • 6

Continue this process to add features for the face, such as the eyes and mouth. Save your work.
