Frequently update tweets to remind followers to donate to your cause.

Twitter is a social media tool that allows people to post status updates, promote website links, share stories, report their whereabouts or coordinate and promote events. Twitter is a great way for organizations to raise funds. According to The Fundraising Coach, Twitter allows individuals to engage donors and potential donors, and also maintain relationships with donors right in the middle of their everyday routines.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a Twitter account and begin following people who interest you or who may be interested in your charity. Use the search field and use terms such as non-profit, charity, fundraising or donations and follow the people whose names appear as a result of the search. Many people whom you follow will reciprocate and follow you; therefore, your 'tweets' will reach your targeted market. If you want to find followers in a specific location, use Nearby Tweets. This will give you a listing of everyone around your area and what they are tweeting about.

    • 2

Find a celebrity to promote your cause. You may not be able to find a famous television or movie personality to endorse your cause, but you may be able to find someone who has a huge social marketing presence or a local news reporter to contribute to your charity.

    • 3

Use hashtags that are created by using the pound sign before a keyword. Hashtags help to categorize your tweets and allow people to search for the relevant keyword. For example, if you want to fundraise for your local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), you could use the hashtag #JDRF or #diabetes in your tweet. Use a Twitter tool such as RT2Give that allows people to retweet your tweets asking for donations. When they retweet, they receive a confirmation Direct Message to which they can reply and send their donation to your cause.

Write a compelling story about your cause and why it is important to you. Post it on a website. Tweet links to the website on Twitter so your followers can read your story. To further interest people into donating, give a daily or weekly prize and select the winner from all those who donated. Keep the fundraising campaign time frame limited so people are more likely to give right away. Recognize the donors publicly by tweeting a word of thanks to them.

Send out tweets several times a day with your message and hashtags with appropriate keywords. Send direct messages to your followers with links to your website and reminders of your fundraiser. If you have a fundraising event in a specific location that your followers can attend, tweet invites and reminders for the event.
