How to Crochet a Tawashi Scrubbie

How to Crochet a Tawashi Scrubbie thumbnail
Tawashi scrubbies can be crocheted quickly with only a small amount of yarn.

Japanese-inspired tawashi scrubbies are a handmade alternative to everyday kitchen sponges. The scrubbies are small, handheld and made of either knitted or crocheted yarn. They can be washed and dried like regular dishtowels. Their compact composition allows you to work closely with tough food stains when washing your dishes. These scrubbies make a unique and useful addition to any kitchen. Because they are small, you can make multiple tawashi scrubbies out of a single skein of yarn, or from leftover skeins from other projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by making two chain stitches. Make a slipknot and place it on the crochet hook. Bring the yarn from back to front over the hook, then use the tip to grab the yarn and pull it through the slipknot, creating a new loop. Drop the slipknot to make the first chain stitch. Grab the yarn again and pull it through the new loop as you drop that loop from the hook to complete the second chain stitch.

    • 2

Make five single crochet stitches into the second chain stitch from the hook. The single crochet stitch is made by inserting the hook into the tip, catching the yarn and pulling a new loop up onto the hook. There should be two loops on your hook. Grab the yarn with the tip again. Draw the yarn through the two loops as you drop them from the hook to complete the single crochet stitch.

    • 3

Arrange the five single crochet stitches plus the unworked chain stitch into a circle. Place the stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.

    • 4

Make two single crochet stitches into each stitch in the round. On the next round, make one single crochet stitch into the first stitch and two single crochet stitches into the next stitch. Repeat this pattern to complete the round.

    • 5

Make one single crochet stitch into the first two stitches of the next round, then make two single crochet stitches into the next stitch. Repeat the pattern to complete the round.

    • 6

Continue increasing the number of single stitches worked between increases. Add one single crochet stitch worked between increases per round. Once you have completed the round with eight single crochet stitches between increases, cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop.

    • 7

Complete Steps 1 through 6 to make the second side of the tawashi scrubbie. Weave in all the loose ends with the tapestry needle.

    • 8

Hold the two scrubbie sides together so that the wrong sides of each face each other. Use the yarn and tapestry needle to sew the edges together.

Tips & Warnings
