How to Prevent Broken Links in a WordPress Transfer

When you transfer your WordPress blog or website from one host to another, any links that you created to your previous posts will be broken. Because WordPress exports and imports your blog content exactly as you wrote it, there is no way to prevent the links from breaking while making a transfer. However, you can install and use a WordPress plugin to track broken links from your WordPress dashboard and allow you to edit them. This prevents leaving broken links in your posts and pages after the transfer is complete.

Instructions

    • 1

      Log into your WordPress dashboard.

    • 2

Click "Plugins" from the left menu.

    • 3

      Click the "Add New" button.

    • 4

Type "Broken Link" in the text box, then click the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

    • 5

Click the "Install Now" link under "Broken Link Checker," then click "OK" to confirm.

    • 6

Click the "Activate" link once the plugin has installed.

    • 7

Click "Tools" from the left menu, then click "Broken Links" from the sub-menu. This will take you to a page that displays all broken links.

    • 8

Click "Edit URL" under the broken link and type in a new URL address for the link to change it. You can also click the "Unlink" option to completely remove the link and leave just the text in your blog.

    • 9

Make these changes for each broken link to prevent leaving broken links after a WordPress transfer.
