How to Convert Inches to Pixels in Pictures
Computers and image-editing software use a different method of measurement called "pixels" for photos and other images, while most printed photos are measured in terms of inches. Converting an image from inches to pixels is necessary when working on an image and adjusting its size for printing. You'll need to find the size of the image in inches and the standard number of pixels or dots per inch used by your computer. Multiply these two numbers to find the number of pixels in an image.

1
Open the picture you want to figure the number of pixels per inch.
-
2
Check the print size of the image in the program you are using. This can usually be done by right clicking on the image and checking "Image Properties." If you are using a software program look for a file menu titled "Image" or something similar and look for "Properties." This will give you the size of the picture in inches. You can also specify inch size when printing an image.

Determine the DPI of your printer or PPI for the computer screen. DPI is the number of "Dots Per Inch" used by a printer or and PPI is "Pixels Per Inch" on a computer screen. The more dots per inch, the higher quality an image. Most computer monitors display images at 72 pixels per inch. When printing images you can set the printer to a specific number of DPI on images.

Multiply the DPI or PPI by the number of inches in width and height of an image. A 4 by 6-inch photo at 72 PPI converts to 288 by 432 pixels. You can multiply the width by the height in pixels to find the total number of pixels in an image.
